The Hongqi E-HS9, China’s luxury state car turned electric SUV is making its presence felt in Norway. During a recent road trip through Scandinavia, someone spotted multiple units and finally caught one charging at Ionity in Larvik.

Hongqi entering the European market is bold but let’s be real it’s going to face serious challenges against brands like Volvo, Mercedes, and BMW.

1. In China Hongqi is seen as a status symbol for officials but in Europe it’s unknown.
2. Will Hongqi set up a proper infrastructure for long-term ownership?
3. Its massive size and flashy design might not fit well in markets where subtle luxury is more appreciated.

That being said, China’s EV industry is evolving fast, and if Hongqi plays its cards right, it could attract buyers looking for something different. But will they be able to compete with established luxury brands long-term?
