Hongqi’s cars have always carried a strong national identity, but when it comes to actual consumer preference, the brand still seems to struggle. Even though it offers luxury designs and features, many buyers in China still favor joint-venture brands like VW, Honda, and Toyota over a Hongqi.
For years Hongqi has been seen as a government and official-use brand which may have limited its mass-market appeal. Even now, despite releasing premium electric vehicles many consumers still consider Geely, BYD, GAC, or even ChangAn before looking at a Hongqi.
Can Hongqi change its image and gain real traction in the luxury EV market or will it remain a brand that struggles with mainstream acceptance?
